The Orphan is a non-profit, supposedly biannual, web-only entity devoted to demolishing literary preconceptions. Intense need to privately contact editor-beings? Write BrendanCarneyByrne at gmail dot com. First Sentences brain-juice: Teddy Legro. We’d be remiss as all get out not to mention that the blogging of M. John Harrison, currently at Ambient Hotel, as well as Rudy Rucker’s webzine Flurb influenced the hell out of us. Weasel instructor and much-harried boat-builder: Bill Cromie. Design maven: Jennette Cheung.
A word on ‘First Sentences’: This is basically Theo Legro’s idea. “I’ve got so many different ones and no stories.” Or something like that. And she still hasn’t contributed one. This comment jogged the editor-beings’ collective memories, and they remembered David Markson giving them a great first sentence years before. “I woke up with it in my head this morning, but I don’t know what the hell to do with it. If I were younger, I’d turned it into a short story, but now… See what you can manage,” the author demanded. And so hence etc.
